Marine animals use underwater sound in many important ways. Just as people talk to each other, marine animals use sound to communicate. However, also like people, vocal marine species hear much more than the sounds they use to communicate with one another. Marine species use their hearing to find food and mates, avoid predators, and navigate.

Jun 25, 2018 · Sonar, short for Sound Navigation and Ranging, is helpful for exploring and mapping the ocean because sound waves travel farther in the water than do radar and light waves. NOAA scientists primarily use sonar to develop nautical charts, locate underwater hazards to navigation, search for and map objects on the sea floor such as shipwrecks, and map the sea floor itself.
